When I run the latest setup.exe on the server I get the "modify/repair/uninstall" dialogue.
Is this correct? How should the upgrade be installed?

We currently have two AD domains, each with 250-300 system. We are in the process of migrating to the newer of the two (abandoning the older, broken one), and that is where the Prism server has been setup.

So far, it's been pretty smooth installing the clients on same AD as the Prism server.

The older AD; however, is a big issue...

1. GPO does not work correctly, is error prone, and is extremely unreliable (one of the reason to abandon that AD).
2. RDP/Dameware is a very time consuming, tedious task with mixed connection results.
3. From my understanding, Prism will only run the client install as the user account which is currently logged into the server. Since no trust is setup (and cannot be) between our domains, this means I have no way to use the Prism Console to push the client.

Any suggestions or alternatives?

Client Install Via GPO Slowwwww

We attempted to deploy the client via AD and it sigificantly slowed down startup of the machines everytime we would reboot. This happened on multiple machines. What other methods are reccomended or could you tell me why the deploy slowed the machines down so much?

Deploy icon is not visible in the systray (Active Directory)

We are currently using Deploy 6 in an Active Directory environment. The deploy icon will not appear in the systray of computers that are running the MS Lightly Managed group policy (Machine and User). The deploy client has been successfully installed and the following processes are running under the user name of system; channeldeploy.sys, prismxl.sys and PTclient.exe. The users that are logged into the computers are local administrators. We have sucessfully deployed software to any computers that not under the control of the Lightly Managed (Machine) group policy, on these computers the icon is visable.

Running the subscription file multiple times

Hi,

Will running the same subscription file more than once on al already registered computer have a negative impact on the behavior of Prism on the computer or on the server?

Situation: the subscription file runs at computer startup and only if the folder c:\program files\Prism Deploy does not exist. If I delete a computer from the channel and run the subscription file again manually, the computer gets registered again.

Because our administration is unfortunately not up to date, we have a lot of computers that have polled the channel quite some time ago. My idea is: if I delete those computers from the channel but accidently delete too much, this would not be an issue if the subscription file is ran again automatically at the next startup, because the client will get registered again. I can easily modify the startup script but this would also mean that the subscription file will run at every startup on computers that are already registered.

Prism Deploy Console - not connecting to channel

When attempting to run the PDConsole.exe, which is located on a remote server, from a workstation, I received an error message when trying to find the channel server. The error message was "A timeout occurred attempting to communicate with the server". The workstation and the server have network connectivity. I uninstalled Prism Deploy from the server and then reinstalled it, but this did not help. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Upgrade 5.x -> 7.x (Channel migration)

Hi,

I have had PrismDeploy version 5.11 installed for a long time. I have no decided to upgrade to the latest version witch is 7.11 at the moment.

I have a setup where my channel is based on Server A and the application on Server B.

After installing the upgrade to Server B, I cannot connect it to the Channel on Server A.

My question is this: How do i get my new installation on Server B to see the channel on Server A? Can I run a db migration utility on it?

Server A is a Windows 2003 server
Server B is a Windows 2000 DC

KB Q10054 on using group policy to auto install prism and subscribe to the channel was changed to reflect (NOT version 7). Any suggestions on how to auto install besides using the prism suite console?

Here is what I would like to do is have an “OU” in active directory and when we move a PC into that “OU” the client install sca.exe (created from the prism suite 7 console) program will auto install to that computer without any interaction from my staff. Would I do this as a batch file in group policy similar to what the KB had stated “add to windows settings startup scripts” or add to the “Software installation” under the Computer Configuration Software Settings in a group policy?

What is the best suggestion? I want every PC in my “OU” to have prism client installed and not miss a single one.

Client Install on Vista

Any suggestions on getting past the unable to write to registry when trying to auto install from console to Windows Vista. We are a Vista testing center (Vista Beta) and making Prism work with Vista is one of our major projects.

Client Installation Failure

I'm trying to install the client (6.0.3) on a few servers running Windows Server 2003. The local firewalls are all disabled on the machines, yet the install fails with the error "Install failed (service failed)." Not sure what's going on here. Any ideas?

We have our channel- SQL- and fileservers (where packages reside) located in a subdomain sub1.office.lan.

A new subdomain, sub2.office.lan will be added and the clients in this domain are also going to use all servers above to have their packages deployed. We just want to add an extra channel to the channel server.

Question: is it wise to keep all Prism-related stuff where it is? Or is it better to migrate everything to the domain office.lan (one lever higher in the Active Directory)? Or perhaps there are better suggestions?

Performance, security and installation issues are our main concern.

Dual Channel subscription

Good day,

I need to subscribe to a channel that has access from a public IP and private IP. Basically the same channel name but two different IP's. This is necessary due to firewall rules preventing access to to the public IP for computers inside my network. I cannot alter the firewall's rules.

Being able to do this would allow me to maintain one Windows image that will work reguardless of its location (Intranet/Internet). What is the best method.....

Client installation failure

Hello folks,

When I attempt to push the Prism client using the Direct Method, I get an error Access Denied. After investigating I see in the Computer Status Reports the computer I attempted to install has a note in the "Client Install" column. Note is "Direct Install Failed (registry access).

I have been able to use the same console and channel to install to other machines, and push packages to those other machines.

New Channel Creation Fails

We have been using prims for our domain (900 clients) for almost a year now. Recently another domain joined our fores and we would like to service the new clients from a separate channel.

However when creating a new channel we get a login dialog box for the channel Prism_deploy_channel_creation_98.... Reinstalling the channel server has no effect. Every time a new channel is created and the same dialog box pops up (with a different Prism_deploy_channel_creation....). The existing channel can be connected every time. We are hosting the database on a windows 2000 server with sql 2000 on the same server the prism channel server is on.

We installed prism in a test environment, where everything works fine, although we used msde there. I compared the ntfs rights, user accounts and the rights within sql with the enteprise manager from sql 2000. Everything seems in order. We are kind of stuck now, any hint or tip in which direction to look for the problem would be very helpfull.

I would like to add that besides this we are very happy with prism deploy, the system works like a charm!

Uninstall Prism 6

Several months ago I started setting up a new server to migrate from Prism 5 to Prism 6. Used an existing SQL Server instead of MSDE. Well, since its been so long, I wanted to start from scratch. I deleted the channels, ran a reinstall, then tried to run the import utility again. It locked up. Now I seem to be stuck in limbo land. I can't uninstall, modify or repair my existing Prism installation. It either locks up, or tells me it can't locate or login to sql server or db. I know the password is correct, I used it ten minutes before. I think its looking for the databases, which have been removed from the SQL Server.

I can launch the console, but it won't connect to anything.

Release licenses and remove clients within PRISM

I am trying to release licenses within Prism Deploy. I found other articles describing how to reset the license count. I am unsure, however, about actually releasing the license.

Is the license released when the computer is deleted from PRISM?

Also, what is the cleanest way to uninstall the client from a computer through PRISM?

Deploying the Prism Client using a .msi

I was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me how to turn the Prism Client (we are using Prism Deploy Client 6.01) into a .msi package?

I need to deploy the package via group policy in Active Directory and automatically have the target computer subscribe to a channel server to push out several different Prism packages.

We have tried to package the Client files and the subscription file as a .msi but, when the package is run, the client installs but the prismxl service does not launch and the computer does not subscribe to a channel. If we manually install the subscription file everything is fine.

Assigned msi packages via Active Directory

We use Prism Deploy to create pwc packages which we in turn create msi packages for deployment via Active Directory and Group Policy.

We are using Windows 2000 server and workstations.

When I assign one of these msi packages as a "computer based policy" the software installs correctly but it is not advertised - it is completely installed for the client. This is in most cases perfectly okay. This is what we want.

However, when I assign one of these msi packages as a "user-based policy" - note I am not publishing I am using "advanced assignment" in Active Directory and Group Policy, the software is not assigned. I do not see it appearing on the Programs menu after the user signs on. They have to go to the Add / Remove Programs applet and click on the Add New Programs button to see software waiting to install - much like I would if I told the system to use "publish" the msi.

My question, can Prism Deploy msi packages be "advertised". If so, what steps am I missing to make it happen.

I want our user based policy msi packages to deploy for the client without them having to go to the Add / Remove Programs applet. This is an extra step that want to avoid.

MSDE installation error

When i try to install prism deloy , it tries to download and install msde but always fails , i hav etroed more than ten times and every time a disconnection occurs and on trying again it starts from the beginning instead of resuming.
So i downloaded MSDE2000a from microsoft and have installed it with a sa password.
now how do i configure MSDE that i can install prism deploy and start using this depoyment product ?

Prism 6 Client Install Fails

I am testing Prism Deploy 6.01. I have been using 5.1.1 for quite some time. I am running a subscription file during login for a few users in our domain. One day they'll be fine, the next there will be a Warning in the Client column in the console. Then if I try to use Install Computers to reinstall the client on that computer, I get the message "attempt to launch client failed".

How can I troubleshoot and get more information on what's causing the issue?

Cannot Connect to Channel

I have upgraded to Prism 6 from prism 5, and moved the channel to an SQL database. If I look on the SQL server I see the channel, but I cannot connect to it from the console. If I try and create a new channel with the same name, it tells me that it already exists. If I try and create a new channel with a different name, it cannot connect to the server.

Prism Deploy 6 installation error

When trying to install the Prism Deploy 6 evaluation, i get the following fatal error at the end of the installation process:

"The channel could not be created. Make sure you are an administrator an the folder you specified is correct."

I've been logged in with domain administrator rights. What can i do?

Target computer does not exist ?

Iam evaluating Prism and run into the following problem:

* When adding a computer from AD the PT client will not install on it automaticlly, the wizard gives the infamous red cross next to the computer "The target computer does not exist"

* When installing the client by hand, the icon pops up in the systray for a split-second and then disappears

Ofcourse applications do not get installed at all...

Any clues ?

Hi everybody

I just installed a trial version of Prism Deploy 6.0.1 and everything works as it should. But if I take a look at my services I've gotten a few new ones related to the sql 2000 installation MSSQL$SW_DEPLOY_SERVER and SQLAgent$SW_DEPLOY_SERVER and at last MSSQLServerADHelper. The MSSQLServerADHelper and the SQLAgent$SW_DEPLOY_SERVER are stopped and set to manual, and the MSSQL$SW_DEPLOY_SERVER is started and set to automatic. Now for my question

Why are these services installed, but not started and why is the "SQL Server Service Manager" in the startup folder if it cannot connect anyway? Why these UPPERCASE names for the service?

Hope, that somebody got an answer for this, not that it matters that much, because I just removed the "SQL Server Service Manager" from the startup folder and ignores the UPPERCASE names

Upgrade client 4.02

I have upgraded the PD server to 5.1 and all new PCs to PD client 5.1 and now I´m trying to upgrade old PCs with client 4.02. I have made a subscription file with 5.1 and it works fine on the old PCs with 4.02. But when I am trying to deploy a package created with 5.1 to the upgraded ones (4.02 to 5.1) an error message says "1600 Task file not found".

Whats wrong?

I am now using PC-Rdist (if not familiar with it, it stores an image on a server and everytime the computer is shutdown it compares the files anything that is changed on the workstation will get changed back to what is on the server). I am having problems with XP and was wondering if Prism Deploy worked in the same manner or if the image was stored locally on each workstation?

We are going to retire our current Prism server, so I need to move our Prism installation to a new server.

How do I go about this? I'm concerned about:

1. Licensing - I have all of our license files, can I just reuse them, or does the origonal Prism server need to be taken off line first?

2. The Channel - Should I just redirect the current channel to the new server?

3. Org groups, configuration groups, computer objects and tasks - how do I move all of these to the new server.

Any help greatly appreciated!

We have Prism Deploy 5.0 on a Windows 2000 (SP3) server.

What actions should we take (before and after) the server upgrade and/or the domain upgrade?

Is it enough to upgrade Prism to version 5.1.1 prior to the Windows 2003 upgrade or should other actions be taken?

I'd like to conduct an informal poll... For those of you who are using Prism Deploy, what is your preferred method of installing the client (after initial rollout)? Examples- push it from the console to each new machine build, include it in the image, use a subcription file, etc... and does your method ensure that users get all the packages assigned to them in the event of a computer upgrade? What issues did you run into and how did you resolve them?

Is there a way to include the Prism Deploy client in a image so that when I roll out WinNT workstations it is already installed? If I change the name of the workstation that is subscribed to a channel will the PC still remain subscribed to the channel but under a different name? Will I need to manually unsubscribe the old computer from that channel as it will occupy two client licenses?

Way to deploy Prism client based upon OU?

Is there a way to enforce Prism client install on a PC if it is moved to a specific OU and have the client removed if taken out? I know how to add/remove applications with group policy but I was looking in the Prism Deploy Console and under groups I see ComputerADname but if I enter just the OU it does not get populated. Am I missing something or would I be better off using group policy in this case? Thanks,

Subscription does not work in unattended mode

We have made a windows 2000 AD startup script for the PC's. We run Windows 2000 SP3 on both the server and the clients
The script should install the client and then it should subscribe to a channel. However, the first step (=installing the client) works fine. We can see the PrismXL service running on the pc (using remote administration tools). However, the second step (=the subscription to the channel) does not work. The script looks something like this:

We tried to use a single subscription file which installs the client and subscribes to the channel. With always the same result: the PrismXL service gets installed, but the pc does not subscribe to the channel. We also used a *.pwsubs file. Did not work either.
If we run the same batch file while logged on as an (local)administrator, it works fine.
We checked the following things already:
- the script knows the variable %distrisrv%
- the script has acces to the share and can read from it
- the scrip runs locally with administrator rights.
- give a reboot between installing the client and subscribing to the channel.

We also tried this script under with the scheduling command AT. This has the same result. It installs the PrismXL service, but does not subscribe.
Is it necessary to be logged on if you want to subscribe? Is there something we do wrong? Our should we just read the manual better?

Channel is corrupt

This is the third time I get this!

Deployment Errors

So Many errors and so little time!

I am using Prism on a 97 User network and when I deploy a package (40 users max this time) I may get 10 to load and the others error, usually the 01600 saying the "Task File Not Found".

I tried breaking the Deployment into small groups (not what I want to do) and I still get the 01600.

I have the packages in a location even our admin have access to and nothing makes any difference.

I even tried Un-attended using the Administators Login.. Same thing.

Any Ideas? I am just getting started so be kind I am a beginner.

Were are the Error codes found? "01600

I have the PDF guides and I can not find what the error codes are are about. We see a lot of 01600 saying it can't find the package but, on re-install it works.
