rules.ini corrupt in 10.5.086

Hello,

I suspect there is a corruption of some kind in rules.ini shipped with some 10.x releases. You could verify this by taking a snapshot of Java JRE using for instance Pictaker 10.5.0.86. The package will be missing every file installed that do not have a file extension!

You should be able to verify this by listing all relevant files on the client and compare to the package:
ls.exe -R -l "%programfiles%\Java" | grep.exe -v "\." >files_with_no_extension.txt

The package will not capture for instance c:\Program Files\Java\jre6\lib\zi\ which contains important time zone information.
Editing the "Ignore Files=" in rules.ini it is possible to do what looks like a correct capture.

Is the statement you shipped to long? Is there a max length for the above entry?
Or is it the repeating file patterns at the end that make Pictaker exclude files without extension? Could you please post a correct rules.ini in 10.5 format?

Need Default User to Apply to All Users

I am fairly new to Prism, but have been installing software in multiple user environments for years. When we install software with items like registration or user specific setup, we typically install the software as a test user and then copy the test user's profile to the default profile. This enables every new user to the computer to pull down the registration and specific setup so it is already setup for him/her. With Prism, I can still copy over the test profile as part of a package. However, if the user has already logged onto a machine he/she will not pull down the default profile. Is there a way I can make the default profile apply to users who already have a profile using a prism package?

Advise in Office2010 packaging??

Hello

i have tried several times to generate a package for office 2010. The Package is created sucessfully, but when i deploy it to a Win 7 machine (64bit OS) the Package installation stops on the client. There are a lot of errors cause the client is not allowed to install files or keys in the registry.

I have the rights to install the files. Seems Microsoft sets different Rights with the Setup routine of Office and after install they are changed again, so the Package is made after the setup routine is finished and does not get correct rights needed for installing the package.

Has anyone got a solution or workaround for this problem?? Think i am not the only one in the world working with Windows7 64 / Office2010 32 and Prism.

I have two folders (McAfee and Microsoft) that continue to appear within a package. They are under the heading "COMPUTER\Program Data\"

When I look at the path or MS-DOS name - for instance McAfee, it says "APPLIC~1\MCAFEE"

How do I exclude this in the rules.ini file if I do not know the absolute path or where it is gathering the data from? From what I can tell, the folder COMPUTER is a special variable. Where is it getting the data?

Adding a custom folder and files to a package

We have a package that is not copying the icons correctly to the user's desktop (Window's default icons) and, in this situation, certain .dll's are not being copied either.

I found that the folder these icon's and .dll's are looking for is the C:\Windows\Installer\{bunch of stuff here}\. This folder is not in the package and I think that it is because the rules.ini file is telling Prism to not look at system folders or files - not sure because I can't see the attributes of this particular folder.

But, this program is huge and it is taking Prism close to 45 minutes to package the software. I am wondering if there is a manual way of adding this folder and files to the package without repackaging?

Performance problem with Pictaker

I have compared two freshly installed virtual machines where I test Pictaker. (I've done tests on brand new dual core machines with the same type of result)

Machine A: Windows XP x86, 1 core, 512 Mb of RAM. A baseline scan takes approx 60 seconds, and it takes approx 50 seconds to find and save changes after installation of the application 7-zip (900 kb installer).

Machine B: Windows 7 x64, 2 cores, 1536 Mb of RAM (Defender disabled). A baseline takes more than 5 minutes, and it took approx 7 minutes to find and save changes after installation of 7-zip.

Is this expected behavior? I would expect Pictaker to run a tad slower on Win 7, but not 5-7 times slower?

Shortcuts break on 64-bit

When I install a package that was captured on a 32-bit OS onto a 64-bit OS, the files properly find the 'program files (x86)' variable location, but the shortcuts don't, so they break since they are pointing to the 'program files' folder. Any way around this?

Can you randomize a filename in Prism Pack?

Flash player 10 for IE8

Hi all,

I have been trying to get a package working for Flash Player 10 using IE8, I have one for Firefox that works fine, and I do try creating a package using downloads from a redistributable license installation.

The weird thing is that when i test a package it does install however if you go to a site, say youtube for instance it tells me that it is not installed. Am I missing something or not looking at it right? I'm hoping someone has some insight that maybe im just overlooking.

Corrupt Self-Install File

Any ideas how to resolve this error? One machine would get this, while the others will not.

The contents of the file "\\\ISCIS.exe" are corrupt

This simple package consists of one file (a .jar) file that is added to 6 directories as a file replacement only if the file exists.

Please advise.

Tried making a package today and got this error when testing the install. Any thoughts? I am guessing .NET using some sort of install engine that tracks registered applications and suspect this product cannot be packaged.

Flash Player for IE7

Has anyone had any success creating a package for the Flash player 9 plug-in on IE7? It deploys correctly because it creates the C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash directory and the plug-in files appear to be there, but when the user launches IE7 and goes to a site requiring Flash, it doesn't recognize it as being installed. I also checked C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files and the Shockwave Flash object is there. Any ideas?

Moving 'Current User' to 'Default User'

When I capture apps, I often deploy them to computers in a lab setting. I'd rather not have all the user settings for every app running every time a user logs in, instead, I prefer to just dump those settings into the default user profile. Using Pictaker 8, it now segments the computer and user settings, which is nice, but there doesn't seem to be a way for me to take all those 'Current User' settings and install them to the default profile. I would create the folder structure by hand, but the package has captured folders like 'Low Integrity Application Data', which I wouldn't even know where to reroute those to. So, A.) Is there a way to do what I want, and B.) If not, can a way be added to the next version? I know I'm not the only one that likes to install apps this way...

MS Office 2003

When making the package with Office 2003 I get errors when users start word, they get the "Installing office" message that always displays when running word for the first time. Then They get the "You must be an administrator to install Office" message, after clicking abort a couple of times they get Word running, this happens every time.

Prism 6 Self Installing file errors

I built a prism package and created a self installing executable to package the install of the IBM rational Software Architecture suite of products. The Package itself is huge about 1.76 GB. The executable is about the same. However, when I try and run the self installing executable, I get the error "unable to read this file". Has anyone encountered this before? Please let me know. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

We would like to know if there is a quick way to generate a list of all packages with their ID's.
In the past we have used an empty .PWC-file with a few settings changed as a template for new packages and have forgotten to give every package a new ID. Result is a lot of packages with the same ID, this is causing trouble when we want to uninstall a package (often another app with the same ID is uninstalled instead). If we could get a list of all conflicting ID's, we can determine how big our problem is and take appropriate actions.
We also would like to know what would be the best 'appropriate action' to fix this problem.

We would like to donate "checking of duplicate ID-numbers" as a feature request. Prism might give a warning when someone tries to assign a package which ID has already been used but has another filename.

Packaging Activesync 4.2

Hi,

We're having problems packaging Microsoft Activesync 4.2. For some reason, Picturetaker adds the complete content of the c:\windows\$hf_mig$-folder to the package, although none of the files have changed in any way. It also adds a lot of folders and registrykeys, all related to Windows Updates. This happens on both a VMWare- and a physical machine with Automatic Updates turned off and is the only installation that behaves like this.

Is this a known problem?

Deploy Problem

I have a big problem with deploy when i start a packet install task (2.8gb package) it starts the install after i got 1.9gb data to client it starts to uninstall the files down to 0 then it restarts the install. some times it restarts after 500mb .. the only i can see in the deploy console log is (Pending OK).. after a long time i get lost connection to server..

I am trying to create a package to deploy Diskkeeper 2007 to the computers on our network.

I was successful in creating a package to install up to version 10 patch 608 and it works both as a full install and just an upgrade to patch 608.

Now with version 11 I can manually install the new version and the application launches smoothly. I can launch the application prior to running the third step in Prism Deploy expert, but after I finish the package and test deploy the package the License information is lost and the application won't open without prompting for the application to be purchased.

How do I troubleshoot this issue problem and get a working package?

I'm investigating the poteintial for using prism pack across our school network and have been testing it with a newly purchased application "the games factory 2" however despite several attempts to convert the prism package to msi all i end up with is a package that installs but does not run.

During the build I get the following messages, firstly something about the trial version not supporting adverts of self repairing shortcuts and then these....

variable folder path in registry value

I want to change a folder path in the registry (as data) by a variable.

QuickTime uses a registry key hklm\software\apple computer, inc\systempreferences value:FolderPath Data:c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\......

Unfortunatly we have computers with different ALLUSERPROFILE location.
I'm looking for a way to change the registry data partially by a variable like Common Appdata.

Is there a way to accomplish this?

If i put a variable in it, it is not resolved.

I have an application which places a INI file in the Windows directory. It contains an entry referring to the current users Application Data folder.

To have the app work for all users I want the %AppData% variable placed in the INI file and leave it as is. I don't want it to be resolved by Prism at installation.

The result would be:

folder=%AppData%

Is this possible ?

Running a file after installing self-exe

For example, i have "Radmin client" package (software for remote control) wich i install on client mashine. after installing i can run it both:1) Rebooting (aplication will run as a service), 2)Aplication can be launched with a bat-file. But i need application to be launched immediatly after intallation. So, is there any way to run program immedeatly after installing the pack???

We have multiple licenses of Adobe Acrobat Pro 7, but not an enterprise license. I am trying to create a package that I can install. All seems to work ok except I now get a prompt now saying "It appears that your computer configuration has changed, please reactivate your product". Is there a way to distribute Acrobat Pro and not have to constantly reactivate the program?

SMS 4.0 Beta went south

Hello everyone,

I'm here to report that an MS SMS 4.0 beta went south here at our location and Prism Deploy is the only thing that can save our day. Somehow our local IT Department decided to test sms 4.0 and it installed itself to everything. It took over all the coms on pc's and servers and everything is running slow slow slow. It is even locking up some of our servers and messing with our PRISM server.

After extensive testing we believe we have constructed a manual procedure for removing the client and agent from desktops. No true uninstall has been created by MS so any additional suggestions would be great. Never hurts to have an extra set of eyes look at something.

We need a little help in developing a PRISM Script. We tried to develop a package to remove the *&#$ however it is just too much involved to make a mistake and we just get cross-eyed looking at all the changes that take place in removing.

Once my staff has completed the written procedures I will post them here in the event someone else has this little problem and to ask for any suggestions on exactly what would be the best procedure to replicate these steps into PRISM.

Your help is greatly appreaciate.

Creating package for Visual Studio 2005

I've been attempting to create a package for Visual Studio 2005.

Everything appears to work just fine, but once I apply the package to a system, Visual Studio 2005 gets the following error when you attempt to start it.

Invalide license data. Reinstall is required.

I believe that the problem involves the registry entry

HKCR\Licenses\5BCBC240-27DF-49C1-8C1C-27B8463009A9

Apparently Visual Studio needs to create this entry on each machine, because as long as the entry is identical to what is included in the Prism Pack, Visual Studio will fail to start.

On the system that the package is applied to, if you try to modify the Visual Studio 2005 installation through Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, you will see a fourth item

Upgrade to Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition -ENU

Where it asks for Product Key to be entered again, but if I enter it it claims that I don't have required permissions to do this.

I don't have the exact steps figured out yet, but with enough mucking around (remove above registry entry, reboot, remove a single component from Visual Studio 2005), eventually this fourth option will disappear from add/remove programs, and then Visual Studio 2005 will run.

Anyone have any nifty tips?

It turns out that I might have had a partial problem with the media which I had downloaded from the MSDN site. Refreshing my network installation point with media from the December MSDN CDs changed the problem slightly for the better.

Now, when I apply a prism pack to a client machine, it still won't run Visual Studio 2005 correctly, still complains that I've got Invalid License Data.

But now, If I go back through add/remove programs and simply select the Upgrade to Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition - ENU, enter my product key and hit the upgrade button, I get the same error about not having privilege to do so, but it works. After doing that, the product runs just fine.

The only thing that I can tell that happens after doing that, is the registry key that I listed above gets changed to hold some apparently machine specific data in it.

RealPlayer 10.5 - force settings for all users

When I created the package for the crappy application RealPlayer 10.5 I made alot of settings in it before taking snapshot. But when logging on as a another user settings are resetted. Settings are stored in several keys located under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RealNetworks

Tried to copy the settings to registry All Users but received an error when installing the package.

What I want is to have the same settings on all users. Any thoughts?

Major Problem - Application will not run!

After packaging an application and rolling it out to test machines I have found that the application will not run under a standard user account (no admin rights).

The package installs fine without admin rights - as it should.

Any idea's?

Hi all,

Right, I have an application that requires MDAC 2.7 Sp1 to be installed for it to work, OK.

So, on a clean W2K OS I install MDAC 2.7 SP1 for which I create a package for.

I then install the application for which I also create a package for.

On a clean W2K OS I run teh packages and everyhitng installs perfectly.

When I try and install the application package on a WXP OS, it keeps asking for files form the application CD and WXP CD. MDAC isnt required to be installed as WXP ships with MDAC 2.7 SP1.

Why will it not install on Windows XP? Any idea's?

Uninstalling an application not installed by Prism Pack

Hi all,

Does anyone know how to get Prism Pack to uninstall an application that Prism Pack hasnt installed already?

I have re-packaged an application that is already out there on users PC's. However, there is an upgrade to the software which will require an uninstall before installing the upgraded software.

It would be great if I could get the re-packaged software to uninstall the previous version first before installing the upgraded version.
